Today, the 2nd of July 2011, together with one of my team members we did a survey on several companies regarding their views on fresh graduates and interns they had previously hired or are currently working in their firms.
Through this survey we found out that most of the companies would usually not be focusing on the academic achievement of their employees. What they are actually looking for are those that are experienced. Or if they are not experienced, they must be willing to learn.
In my opinion, students should really involve themselves in extra-curricular activities to expose themselves to the world outside of the stack of books. Getting high CGPA pointer in college and university does not necessary convey a good future job prospect.
Even though good pointer may land you into a good position. But to “get” a job and to “sustain” a job is totally two different stories. It may be easy to get you a job, but in terms of sustaining it with your experience and abilities, there is still a big question mark in front.
Through extra-curricular activities, it could possibly help an introvert or someone who has social phobias or those that are afraid to speak in front of the public to challenge the things that they are afraid of.
By joining the 5th National Internship Challenge hold by Jobmarket, I have to forced myself to challenge the things that I am scared of. I have to meet up with the managers of companies to do surveys so that I could accumulate points for this NIC competition. I received rejections and I learn from there. I appreciate those companies that were willing to spend their times with me and my team member.
Without rejections you would always think that the world is always of your favour; you could do anything that you want and ask for anything that you wish. At the end of the day, it is self-complacency that would lead one to their downfalls.
Better to START from zero than to STAY at zero forever
